Diets For IBS – What To Eat, What To Avoid

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), also known as ‘spastic colon’, is a functional bowel disorder and is much affected by a sufferer’s diets for IBS. There are three variants. When diarrhea is the main symptom, the condition is referred to as ‘IBS-D’. When constipation predominates, it is classified as ‘IBS-C’ and when the two symptoms alternate, the disease is called ‘IBS-A.’ It is also characterized by abdominal pain, bloating and a change in bowel habits without a specific organic cause. It may be triggered by a stressful life event, infection or simply the onset of maturity. Individually tailored diets for IBS may help to control symptoms.

An erratic diet, with excessively large meals or skipping meals altogether, can aggravate symptoms. Recommended diets for IBS include three meals and three snacks a day. Other general strategic advice is to increase fiber and fluid intake. Begin the day with a healthy breakfast. Eat a variety of foods. Eat slowly and and make mealtimes relaxing and enjoyable.

Dietary fiber, also known as ‘roughage’, may be either soluble or insoluble. Soluble fiber is fermented in the intestines to produce gases and metabolically active byproducts. Insoluble fiber is metabolically inert and absorbs water as it passes through the digestive system and makes defecation easier.

The main fluid intake should be water, although weak tea and fruit juices may occasionally be substituted. Caffeine and fizzy drinks can aggravate symptoms and alcohol should be kept to a minimum.

A survey was conducted in people who were diagnosed with IBS. They were asked to provide lists of those foods they found helpful with their symptoms and those foods that they avoided. Included in the top ‘helpful’ foods were fish, fruit, vegetables, rice, brown bread and yoghurt.

Top Most Avoided Foods in Diets for IBS

The top ‘most avoided’ foods included fatty or spicy foods, cheese, onions and leeks, bran and pulses (beans, lentils, etc.). There were a few items that appeared on both lists – citrus fruit, cereals, milk and alcohol. This highlights the clinical finding that IBS is a very individual disease and that patients vary in their symptoms, causes and things that trigger their symptoms.

If excessive flatulence is a problem, then avoiding ‘windy’ foods is recommended. These include brussels sprouts, broccoli, legumes (including baked beans), cabbage and cauliflower. Carbonated drinks may also exacerbate symptoms. Eating oats may reduce bloating symptoms. Certain sugars (lactose, fructose, sorbitol) can exacerbate symptoms. Lactose is found in milk and other dairy products. Note that reducing your intake of dairy will also reduce your calcium so make sure this is replaced, possibly with yoghurt. Forty per cent of patients involved in a study of sugar intolerance obtained relief of symptoms by eliminating the particular sugar that was identified as aggravating the condition.

Before beginning any new dietary regime, it is essential to visit your doctor in order to eliminate any sinister causes for the IBS symptoms. Discuss the proposed new changes with your physician. Once you have the green light, introduce the changes gradually and keep a note of what you are eating in your diets for IBS and how it affects your symptoms.
